I took a 3-hour surf casting lesson with Ron Arra, and it honestly exceeded my expectations. I originally reached out hoping to get a feel for two-handed overhand fly surf casting and to refine my spinning surf casting technique. Ron did far more than that. He made the lesson relaxed, focused, and encouraging, and by the end he had me casting 60+ feet into a headwind with the two-handed rod. The fly casting portion was easily the highlight of the lesson for me. On the spinning side, Ron quickly saw what I was doing wrong. I was overpowering the rod and not letting it load properly. He fine-tuned my casting stroke, body position, and timing, and showed me how to get power into the cast much more efficiently. The difference was immediate! I was casting farther with less effort! He also shared great tips on fishing for stripers, which upped my game !. Ron is patient, kind, and incredibly clear as a teacher. He went above and beyond to make sure that my technique dialed in and he was even generous with his time! Ron is truly a legend of the sport, but also a genuinely great person. I left the lesson feeling like a far more confident surf caster, especially with the two-handed fly rod! Gaining that fly casting ability gave me the reassurance that reaching fish in the surf, whether on fly or spinning gear, is no longer something I need to worry about. Ron gave me the technique, knowledge, and skill to keep improving. I am definitely getting a new two-handed fly setup for fluke fishing!. I’d highly recommend Ron to anyone looking to improve their surf or fly casting.

Our experience with Ron was absolutely wonderful! After teaching us some knots and explaining various lures, Ron gave expert instruction in surf casting. Our family (ages 15-57) had a great time. Ron is a wonderful, warm man with an incredible amount of experience. By the end of the lesson, we were each casting with good technique and self-confidence. Also, Ron’s experience as a special education teacher proved valuable, as he quickly connected with our neurodivergent son and got him involved in the activity. When we return to the Cape, we will certainly reach out to Ron for a follow up lesson. Highly recommended!!

What can I say? This was exactly what I expected as well as wanted from a guide /instructor experience. Ron is not only a 5 time world champion. He is also a proud father, husband and a man of nature. Completely aware of everything around him under the blue skies of earth. I will also add he is a good son of his parents he spoke so fondly of. The nuance of his lesson during our time is what made the difference for me. Yes, there are the big technical things he will help you with. But the small tips , hand positioning or the slight rotation of your hips required you to put away the phone, To not look at the watch and simply pay attention. The time will go by quicker than you think. I can not stress enough regardless of your experience level in surf fishing and overall casting... at some point in time, a session with Ron is in my belief a requirement. Tight lines .
